I really like this book. But I will not rant about my obsession. I'll explain why you should read this series .

This series definately has a anime feel to it, but it which i haven't seen before. There is a lot of mixing of past and present in order to give us the sex scenes we read smut for, without rushing the emotional development of the main characters. A really smart move in my opinion, however the "past" scenes have become like "Sansa" chapters to me. While it may have value, it's a seperate story I'm not anxious to get to.

The author does provide a good "magic" system, that was a bit technical at the beginning, but is building at a solid pace that doesn't leave you lost in the details as much as excited about the possibilities.

This 3rd book had much more "present" action in it then the 2nd, the ties between the characters are tightening and growing stronger. I'm very excited for the next release or two, when the inevitable first climax (in more ways then one) is sure to come.

Final note, the main character isn't a complete.. wimp. Although you do see where he started as that wimp in his "past", you can unashamedly admire the bold, assertive self confindence he has in the present.

It had me chortling laughter which feels good in a book you are reading while still keeping the drama and feel of adventure by not devolving into slapstick comedy. I highly recommend this series and if you have read the first 2 you have a good idea of the ride these adventure books will take you.

Yet another great entry into the series. It seems quite intriguing on how that in Eryk's previous life after his family's death that he had found love again, though for a short time, with a woman who had taught him about alchemy and who was the one suffering from Spiritual Poisoning that helped him to save Fay. Kind of funny how clearly obvious, in my opinion, that these two ladies are one in the same and Eryk hasn't seem to be able to put that together. If that is truly the case it makes me wonder how Adult Fay had managed to escape the marriage to Grant and where she learned alchemy all while she never revealed the truth to Eryk when he obviously would have shared his story after she saved him.

The story gets even more interesting with the mystery over the loss of a great deal of knowledge in both alchemy and the Spiritual Arts that seems to have been done on purpose to weaken the city as Eryk continues his mission and learns these previously unknown facts. It makes me intrigued to understand why this is the case and who is responsible, although it just may be the Great Overlord yet it may be another unknown party.

It is also cute how stubborn Eryk is being over the fact that while he does love Kari he has also developed feelings for Fay and both have clearly made their feelings known as well. He clearly is capable of being able to love more than one woman, also the fact that this society doesn't seem to have issues with polygamy, yet because of him being stuck in his past life can't think of the possibility in loving more than one woman at the same time. Plus, there will clearly be some head-butting between the two when the harem element really ramps up over the tragic event that broke their friendship. Although, after the lamia flashback and the odd actions of his snake roommate makes me suspect that more fun is about to happen.

This is not my normal style of book, but it was recommended to me and I enjoyed it.

It wasn't an epic tale with myriad twists, deep plots, and enough characters that I needed to take notes. Instead, it was a quick jaunt into a new world where I was immediately dropped into action then followed with a quick catch up and move forward. It was actually refreshing that everything was so straightforward.

The chapters are not long, but they are satisfying.
The character development is fast, but not lacking.
It's the story of someone once powerful that has to rebuild with their knowledge of before. Minor time travel elements, so that plays a factor as well, and I feel it's well done.

Is this the best book ever? No.
Was it good at what it set out to do? Yes.

You're not going to compare this to Game of Thrones any time soon, but as a quick and entertaining break, it served its purpose magnificently.

(‼️Spoiler Warning‼️) a man who lost everything. His wife, child, his home. He went to battle the one who caused it all and ended up breaking time and reality with all the magical power that they both released! He ends up getting a second chance, and he decides that he will do this differently. Now, I know that a “few” books and light novels have done things similar to this story’s plot, but I felt this one actually took time to make the relationships and hardships real for both the characters and the readers. I actually pitied the main character at times, and felt sorry for the loved ones that he lost. I should point out, as I usually do in my reviews, that this is NOT a children’s book. There are sex scenes and “graphic” pictures in this light novel. I can also tell you that these picture leave little to none in the imagination department. 😳🤯🥵

I have started reading other series from this author and they're very good. I hope that one day he finds his way back to making a season 2 for this series. Well, this series just gets better and better. What really has impressed is that the author continues to be able to meld the cutesy and fun antics of the characters with the violent and dark themes that have become more prevalent. While other books have been dark, this one felt the most emotionally draining for the characters. The whole book felt like a struggle for Kevin and Lillian and when it finally ended I even felt drained. This in no way is a bad thing and I love that the author doesn't simply rely on the same plot devices to move the story.

This book also offers insight into the kitsune culture the readers haven't experienced before. It was interesting to discover the environment that shaped Lilian and Iris which shined a light on how they became the way they were. Hopefully the author will finally take pity on Iris and let her into the lovey dovey romance with Kevin and Lillian mostly because I love Iris as a character and what's wrong with wanting a favorite character to have happiness? Overall, loved the book and can't wait for the next.

This book is one of the more important in the series, it shows the characters growth and the inherent difference between Youkais and Humans. But not only that! They are not so different from human emotionally, they have greed, lust, can lie to themselves. You could say that the humans they detest and sneer, at influenced them culturaly too; they don't have a choice if they want to survive. It's either adapt or die. The book was funny, so much fan winking and 4th wall breaking, that's what I love with this author he knows how to entertain.

Let me start out by saying that ordinarily, I hate stories that break the fourth wall -- even if it's on purpose, as it was in this A Fox's Rescue. I think it's because I've seen the technique ruin so many stories in the past.

But wait, you say! I gave the story five stars!

A good story can make me recant my preconceptions, and this story did just that. On a few occasions, it broke the fourth wall for comedic effect, and it worked!

There was a lot I enjoyed about this book. I liked the martial arts action. I liked how the plot progressed. I liked its continuity. I also loved the anime references. If you've never watched anime, I don't think you'll find the references distracting, because they're so much part of the characters. But for me, they deepened my appreciation of the story.

Speaking of characters, they really pushed my review to five stars. Kevin and Lilian's (whose is a Celestial kitsune -- a mythical being with human and fox traits) relationship, the foundation of the book, was touching and awesome and the stuff of fairy tales, all at the same time. Iris, a void kitsune, had way more depth than I expected from an action/comedy/romance book. Her conflict with her void nature was dramatic and sympathetic. All three of these characters were a delight whenever they were on the page.

But my favorite character had to be Kevin's mom. She was only in the book for a little while, but she was the embodiment of a cool mom. We need more cool parents in literature.

I'm looking forward to the next volume!

another great aspect is the relationship development, iris lovers over the last few volumes have seen how she's opened up more to Kevin and isn't solely in it just so she can be by Lillian's side and this volume is no different.lot's of Iris development and shenanigans. American Kitsune is a series that has impressed me from the start, and A Fox's Mate is no exception. This entry in the series may not introduce any new characters barring the villain, but the character development, that's the real gem in this entry.

One of the biggest drawbacks I've seen in many light novels, fanfictions, and the ecchi comedy series as a whole, is the characters. Most of them can be replaced with cardboard cutouts and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Others, are just plain useless. Not so with American Kitsune, and A Fox's Mate shows that quality in spades, then proceeds to go the extra mile. All of the characters, from the man in the spotlight Kevin Swift, to even the side-characters like Lindsay, all of the characters have grown tremendously since their introduction.

That being said, the series wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. This is actually the darkest book in the series up to this point, and oddly enough, I'm finding that to be a good thing. A large piece of the story this time was Kevin dealing with his actions at the end of the previous book, and the trials and tribulations that come along side said actions. And that, is the reason I love this series, and why I praise Brandon Varnell's work as an author. Kevin is a human, plain and simple. Or maybe not, we're not sure yet. But Kevin isn't like the protagonists of Rosario Vampire, To Love Ru, or any other ecchi anime. He has logical emotions, he reacts how a human would react, but above all, he's not some generic anime protagonist. And THAT'S what makes him an incredible character.

In short, American Kitsune book 6: A Fox's Mate is one of the best entries into the series, and that's not something I'd say lightly. If you're a fan of the series, and you enjoyed book 5, this book is going to be great. If you're a newcomer to the series however, I'd recommend reading the previous five books first.

If you're looking for entertainment with no intellectual effort required, and we all need some of that in this world, this series could go on forever, IMHO. For the intended market, this represent a new high in low-brow.

The author shows a command of the anime/manga fan world, and no detail of the real world is allowed to spoil his universe. I would suggest he invest in a thesaurus, and use it. Some expressions intended to be colorful become tiresome when they appear at least once per page. I would rate the humor as G, for "goofy". Everything else is solidly in the PG-13 range, except for a few set-piece scenes of sexy or violence, where it sticks a toe across the "soft R" boundary.

I give him credit giving the ecchi a good workout without ever having to exceed his own boundaries except for a sentence or two. The "violence" is either anime-type humorous or slapstick. The real-type violence is rare, and has no relation to the real-world. But the major villains sometimes have to throw a grenade, rather than a banana cream pie. But it's still a denatured version, and most readers won't have up-close and personal experience with that kind of hardware.

I have minor issues with editorial competency in a few matters of vocabulary, where a common word is used in place of a very specific item that sounds the same, spells differently, and has a vastly different meaning. It's a fingers-on-the-chalkboard item inaudible except to dogs, and people who are required know the dirrerence.

Any chance of a parallel graphic novel as well? Those pencil thumbnails are appealing, so the artistic talent is already there.

Good balance of light humor and the darker side of life with youkai.

Loved it! As other reviewers have stated this volume was a bit darker then the previous ones. And I believe this to be a good thing. As it helps to set the pace for future volumes, and gives us a glimpse into the youkai world that poor Kevin is headed for. Lots of foreshadowing about what maybe ahead for the group. Plus it shows that youkai are not the only ones who may have an agenda of their own. The only down side was the lack of info on Lillian's mother, and how she became the way she is, I just feel she was used more for the comic route then was needed. (Like breaking the fourth wall one to many times. Heh!) Overall a very enjoyable read. Keep it up!

This was the first book, so far, that I couldn't stop reading. Adding in Lilian's family gave us new, interesting characters for the main cast to play off of, and adding in Iris brought an interesting new internal conflict into the story.

While siscon/brocon shows up quite often in anime and manga, Iris's love for Lilian is incredibly genuine. It may make some uncomfortable to see "incest" of this nature in the story, but I would suggest viewing it as a woman loving another woman (think the main leads from the yuri manga Citrus). Also, the kitsune world is open to same-sex relationships and incest relationships, and it's interesting to see Lilian struggle with her kitsune nature (and her previous relationship with Iris) versus her love for Kevin and wanting to respect his (and perhaps the reader's) views.

Iris is an intriguing character (and has become my favorite) and one I can't wait to see develop further. Despite her deep attachment to Lilian and her brash, outspoken nature, we can see that there's good in her too.

Aside from new characters, this story has a lot more tension and plot and explores darker themes by introducing a sadistic villain.

While the drama can seem a little melodramatic at times, this story has strong world building and character development and is a really fun ride
